A walk without a destination

A familiar neighbourhood looks different when the route is left open. Choose a starting point, put away the map for a few streets, and let an interesting doorway or a patch of shade suggest the next turn. A short walk can be complete without arriving anywhere in particular.

Pay attention to transitions. A quiet side street might meet a busy square; a narrow passage may open onto a garden. These changes give a place its rhythm. Notice where people pause, which benches catch the light, and how the street sounds change around a corner.

Carry only what makes the walk comfortable: water, a light layer and a small notebook. Before turning back, write down one thing you would have missed on a hurried journey. A detail recorded in a few words is often enough to bring the whole walk back later.
